Street artist makes sidewalk rain magic

SEATTLE — Rain is so common in Seattle, most don't notice how the moisture changes the world around them.

Peregrine Church wants to change that.

"I'm a maker," he said.

He's a rain-maker or rain-art-maker.

"I want to make the world better," he said. "Make people smile."

Church created "Rainworks" in May of 2014. It's artwork that appears only when it rains. He uses "Always Dry," which is marketed as environmentally safe, non-toxic, and non-flammable when dry.

The untreated surface darkens color when wet, while the treated areas stay dry and don't change color.

Church has created 25 Rainworks over the last year. The images have grown so popular, people pay Church for his work.

"It's amazing to take something that makes people sad and turn it into something that makes people happy," he said.

The art lasts four months to a year, depending on the surface and foot traffic, but Church is always planning new ones.

If you want to help Church keep Rainworks going, visit his Kickstarter page for more information.
